On 2 November the AccessHE Year 8 Discover Arts and Social Sciences Expo took place in collaboration with our member HEI Royal Holloway. The event was hugely informative for the 40 Year 8 Students involved, providing many of them with their first University campus visit and an insight into popular university subjects that they might not have yet encountered in the classroom.

Students were treated to gruesome Greek theology tales in the classics workshop whilst Trump dominated discussion in the politics seminar. In the subsequent workshops Royal Holloway Criminology lecturers delved into the complexities of the criminal psyche and languages and culture provided gave student an interactive introduction into the four most popular European languages.

The workshop content and extraordinary venue, without doubt, made for an impressive initial University experience.  The following day AccessHE’s first STEAM Expo took place at Lewisham Southwark College in collaboration with our member HEI’s Rose Bruford College and London South Bank University. Rose Bruford’s science workshop provided learners with immersive visual demonstrations of the intricacies of lighting design, students tested their artistic finesse in the model making workshop whilst Rose Bruford’s engineering workshop combined creativity and mechanical knowledge to create creepy automated toys.

LSBU’s maths workshop used Marshmallows in a predictably popular bridge building exercise and technology based careers of the future were hot topics in the app design seminar. As a further education establishment, the venue of Lewisham Southwark College provided the students with a valuable insight into the interrelationship between secondary and further education and the scope of opportunity that different further and higher education routes afford. A big thank you to all the HEI staff whose efforts made both Expos such successes.
