AccessHE is pleased to announce the third event in the AccessHE London Student Outcomes series – Degree Apprenticeships: A social mobility opportunity? – taking place 09:30 – 13:00 on Monday 23 April 2018 in central London.

Are Degree Apprenticeships the key to “smashing the Level 3 glass ceiling” of apprenticeships? Can they offer debt-free progression to higher level jobs for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds and deliver a real widening of participation in higher education? Or should we be concerned about who might be missing from new uses of levy funds? This event will explore these questions and more by sharing emerging best practice in this area, bringing together employers, universities and other organisations to explore some of the key challenges and opportunities for promoting social mobility through Degree Apprenticeships in London.

Speakers

We are looking forward to welcoming a range of speakers and facilitators on the day:

• •  Dr Darryll Bravenboer (Director of Apprenticeships and Skills, Middlesex University) will be chairing proceedings.
• •  Sarah-Louise Collins (Director of Widening Participation, University of Winchester) and Stella McKnight (Director for Employer Partnerships, University of Winchester) will be presenting findings from their HEFCE Degree Apprenticeship Development Fund (DADF) project ‘The Social Mobility Pipeline to Degree Apprenticeships’.
• •  Stephen Fox (Director of Higher Education, University Campus St Albans) and Dave Griffiths will be sharing their experiences of developing and using an innovative Recognition of Prior Learning (ROPL) process that unlocks a variety of learning opportunities for mature learners.
• •  Alison May (Apprenticeship Manager, London South Bank University) will explore how LSBU are working with local stakeholders to support Southwark residents’ pathways to Degree Apprenticeships in the Health sector.
• •  Thanks to Wendy Breakell (Break Into Business/Westminster Kingsway College), we will also be hearing from younger Higher/Degree Apprentices about their backgrounds and experiences of applying to work with City firms. There will also be an opportunity for Q&A.

We are also pleased to note that Andy Durman (Managing Director, Emsi UK) will provide some printed background labour market information to contextualise the current opportunities degree apprenticeships offer in London. The event is also being supported by UVAC, the University Vocational Awards Council.

Attendance is FREE for AccessHE members and £25 for non-members.

This is the third event in the AccessHE London Student Outcomes series, exploring four key emerging themes in widening participation across the full student lifecycle. The final event in the series will look at post-HE progression for learners from under-represented groups.
