Capital Access

Nine AccessHE member higher education institutions (HEIs) took part in the Capital Access project to build a new local infrastructure for access to HE in London.

In order to explore the distinct unevenness in progression to higher education by local authority in London for students on Free School Meals (FSMs), project HEIs worked together with local authorities, schools, colleges and educational providers in a number of ways:

  • Holding regular ‘Access to HE Local Forum’ meetings with senior representatives from all the participating institutions in order to identify ways in which to work collaboratively at widening access.
  • Piloting local Expo programmes for FSM learners, with input from the Access to HE Local Forums. The Expos were targeted at Year 8 learners as feedback from AccessHE consultations with schools and local authorities across London indicated that there was a gap and distinct need to support learners as they establish their views on HE at Year 8.
  • Developing an online course, in consultation with the Local Forum, to support learners from widening access backgrounds to progress to HE, targeted at staff in schools (and in HEIs) to help them develop the knowledge and skills required.
