This month, our Year 10 and Year 12 AccessHE London Uni Connect students took part in some of their final Uni Connect sessions before the end of the academic year. Here is a glimpse at some of the insightful sessions delivered across our Uni Connect schools in the London Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham and Havering.
‘Fight the Flood’
The Institution of Civil Engineers delivered an interactive ‘Fight the Flood’ workshop to our Year 10 AccessHE Uni Connect London students at Emerson Park Academy. Learners raced against the clock to prepare flood defences for a Lego town, using a limited amount of plasticine to stop the water. The activity gave students an insight into the duties of a civil engineer as well further information regarding the career options within this discipline.
‘Resilience and wellbeing’ / ‘Employability skills’
This term, the National Citizen Service, a personal and social development programme for 15 – 17 year olds, delivered a range of sessions to our Year 12 Uni Connect students. The programme helps students build skills for work and life, helping learners develop greater confidence, self-awareness and responsibility. One of the sessions was focused on ‘Resilience and wellbeing’ while another one focused on ‘Employability skills’. Throughout each session, students were encouraged to focus on challenging and developing their personal and social skills such as leadership, teamwork and communication.
Outreach media tutor Ian Cownley from Ravensbourne delivered an ‘Aurasma (Augmented Reality software)’ workshop, which brings together the physical and virtual world. Aurasma is created out of technology that is capable of recognising and understanding images, symbols and objects in the real world. This technology then delivers digital content in real time, including videos, animations and audio. In this session, students used the Aurasma studio and quiver to create a storyboard with posters, flyers and advert for a 30 minute television programme on the topical issue of Brexit. As groups they shared their storyboard with the class and then brought it to life using augmented reality.
