The Sydney Russell School visit Ravensbourne University London

May 31, 2018

This past month has been very busy for our Uni Connect  learners as they took part in a variety of workshops, mentoring sessions and a university visit. Following a workshop focusing on digital media and design, Year 12 students from The Sydney Russell School, Barking & Dagenham, had the opportunity to further explore their options within this area as they spent the day at Ravensbourne University London.

Students were met by Progression Officer Lucy Slater before Sessional Lecturer Alberto Villanueva gave the students a tour of the building and organised relevant activities for them to partake in. During this tour students got the chance to examine the process of prototyping, 3D printing, 3D scanning, laser-cutting as well as tour the sound design room and the material library, where they were given an insight into where and how Ravensbourne University London students develop their projects and carry out practical activities.

The day comprised of both independent and collaborative tasks. Learners worked individually on drawing the Eiffel Tower and then worked collaboratively to create the Tower solely out of straws. Throughout the day learners were also able to speak to current university students about their work as well as ask about their experiences of university, thus helping learners gain a further insight into higher education.

Students seemed to have really enjoyed the visit, providing positive feedback and many even signing up to a university open day in media to further explore the opportunities in this area.
